Know anyone who doesn’t google occasionally? Probably not. Google is the gold standard in internet search engines. There are many others out there, and many others that as an affiliate marketer you will need to give due attention. But nothing is more important to affiliate marketers then learning everything they can about how Google works and how Google can work for them.

As a for-profit company and one that is publicly traded on the stock market, Google makes billions of dollars each year. It also makes affiliate marketers billions of dollars each year.

But Google is a complex monster, and the success you achieve in affiliate marketing is directly related to how well you master each of the different areas of Google. Don’t kid yourself; this is not overnight learning. But boy, does it pay off!

GOOGLE ADWORDS-ONE PIECE OF THE PIE

Many of you already know what Google Adwords is. And some of you may be already utilizing this in your own affiliate marketing business. But it never hurts to make certain you clearly understand what Adwords is and what it’s not.

Google Adwords is the most used, most profitable way of advertising on the internet.

To get an immediate example of Adwords, search for anything using Google. An example – search for beach balls. The very familiar search display pops up with the first page of relevant material on beach balls. This information is summarized and sources are cited and the link to find the information is the last line of the search.

Now look at the far right side of the page. You will see several small advertisements for products or services or websites related to beach balls (in Google’s determination). These are Google Adwords and they are written and placed there by affiliate marketers who have paid a fee. Many product companies also use Adwords to advertise directly, so you really can’t tell who has placed the ad; the selling company or an affiliate marketer who has partnered with the selling company.

The whole idea behind Adwords is reaching targeted customers (those already looking for information about beach balls) who may be in the market for the product or service you are promoting.

Advertise using Google Adwords because it produces potential customers who have already shown an initial interest in your product.

Obviously, there are many techniques and strategies for using Adwords and many ways to fine-tune your ‘campaigns’ to produce the highest profit. The good news is that Google has made the process for getting started in Adwords fairly simple. But keep in mind before you start paying to advertise anything on the internet, you had better have a complete understanding of what happens when a potential customer clicks on your ad and reaches the desired link. The best-written, best-placed Adwords in the world won’t make you any money if where they lead the customer is a sub-par site.

Don’t start your affiliate marketing business with Adwords. Start with understanding the entire business, researching the best products to promote and developing top-notch presales and sales approaches.

REGISTERING FOR AN ADWORDS ACCOUNT

As mentioned, the process for getting started in Adwords is really quite simple. It’s even more so if you’ve done your homework and understand the big picture of affiliate marketing. Since Adwords is just one piece of the pie, you’ll be able to get follow the step-by-step directions for creating your very first ad.

Go to http://adwords.google.com/select to get started. When you click the “Sign Up Now” button, you’ll be prompted to write your first ad. Many people start here by creating a “mock” ad. You may or may not have already identified products or affiliate partners you want to advertise for, so creating your account by just filling in the blanks with fake information can be a quick way to get started. You will delete this “ad” later.

You will now face two important questions: How much do you want to spend per day (average) and what is the maximum amount you want to pay each time someone clicks on your ad? Again, if you’re entering fake information, it really doesn’t matter. But these will become very important decisions as you venture out in to the real world of Adwords.

You will need to decide how much money you are willing to spend on Adwords, per product and as a whole.

Your final step will be to choose a login, which will necessitate having a Google account. If you don’t already have one, there are steps to follow to get one. Now it’s time to really dig in and learn all the ins and outs of how Adwords work. It may appear simple, but the profits are in the details.

The first step in the preparation process is to have your initial website properly prepared. Please pay attention to the word “properly.” Google has very definite guidelines for websites so reviewing their Terms of Service is crucial to being accepted into the program. If your website does not fall within their established guidelines it will be unceremoniously rejected.

Look specifically for Google’s Program Policies. One item of importance is that Google only accepts completed websites. You are not allowed to have any pages “Under Construction.” Furthermore, check all your links and graphics making sure that all hyperlinks and source links are functioning as they should. Broken links can be a cause for rejecting your website.

Google also has a set of Quality Guidelines to which you must adhere in order to gain an approval. The Quality Guidelines and Program Policies lay forth exactly what is expected regarding your website’s content and other qualifications for membership into Google AdSense. All of these are easily accessible on the Google AdSense website. Granted not many people enjoy reading anyone’s terms of service and policies, but in the case of AdSense it is a necessity.

Second, you need to decide whether you’re signing up as an individual or business. The revenue you generate is taxable and you are advised to seek the counsel of an accountant in making this decision. Google asks whether you are registering as an individual or business.

Third, you need to open a checking account. In the application process Google will ask for information on where they can send your commission checks. It is advised that once you have your AdSense account setup that you switch to automatic deposit.

Once you have taken these three steps you are ready to make your request for a Google AdSense account. One mistake that so many aspiring AdSense publishers make is that they do not read the Terms of Service. Google is very specific about the requirements and they are very diligent in seeing that they are obeyed. If you’re sloppy in the application process and after, you’re experience with AdSense will be very unfulfilling. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to generate income because of laziness or a nonchalant attitude.

Your approval is based only on the initial website submission. After you are approved you can submit as many websites as you like on a variety of topics. This does not mean that you can publish websites contrary to Google’s Terms and Service, but you are given a little more latitude in publishing your websites.

Maybe you don’t have a website but you wish to have an account. If this is the case Google allows you to sign up for a free blog at the company owned website http://blogger.com, allowing you to use this for your website submission. For an easy approval it is suggested that you take this route. Once you are approved then you can begin submitting your other websites.

Don’t spend a lot of money on web hosting services, as there are some great deals on the Internet. A recommended hosting company is Equus Hosting. As part of a good AdSense strategy you want to have a great number of websites. Equus Hosting has a plan that allows you to have unlimited sites for one very low monthly price. In addition, they offer over 50 additional products and have 24/7 customer support.

A very important element in the rapid adoption of AdSense is that it has been very easy for publishers to get the ads on their site as quickly as possible.

Integrating AdSense in your website takes only a few minutes, and you can be on your way with one or more nicely integrated AdSense ads.

The first thing you need to do is navigate to http://www.google.com/adsense and either apply or log in with your existing account and password. What follows is a page presenting the Google AdSense Terms and Conditions which you must agree to in order to proceed.

You are presented with a report page which you can use to get a detailed status on how your AdSense advertising is doing. This allows you to improve your site’s contents and layout to maximize your AdSense earnings.

On the top of your page you also have link to the setup section where you can generate the code that will need to be pasted on your website in order to have AdSense banners on your page.

You can use AdSense for text (the said ads), using a search box or with referrals. Your choice among these options depends on how users will navigate your site.

Finally, there is a “My Account” tab which allows you to set up details concerning your account, payment and tax information.

To add a text ad on your site, go back to the “AdSense Setup” tab and click the “AdSense for content” link. Make sure you have cookies enabled in your browser.

You can make a choice between ad units and link units. The former contain text and or images concerning a certain site for each unit, most with a detailed description, the latter only contain links to certain types.

Of course, it’s a bit hard to know which type you should use so you should probably experiment with both for a while before you decide.

You can also view an example of how the unit will look to the right of your page. However, you may only use three ad units and one link unit on any given page. This is believed to be a step which Google takes for quality control.

The next step is to choose your add format and colors. You can basically select any color palette you choose with Google offering some of its own if you don’t have the time or skill to create one. You can constantly view how the palette will look through the aid of an example. The one that works best in terms of appearance and revenues will vary with the look, feel and content of a website.

However, your ad formats are limited to a choice of eleven formats. There’s an “Ad Formats” link which takes you to a page that lets you see all even of these in action so you can decide best which one suits your site. Sometimes the most intrusive, doesn’t work best however again, this can vary from website to website.

After you finish with customization, you can click “Continue” from the bottom of the page.

You are now presented with a section entitled “AdSense for Content”. You can click anywhere in the text and that shows the JavaScript required to get AdSense running. This will automatically select the text in the box.

You can then copy it and paste it into your pages directly. If you use dynamic pages, you should paste this code within your template so as to ensure that it gets displayed on any page of your website. Some advertisers choose not to display Adsense on every page, and this is understandable. An example of this is a company that has adsense, may also have terms and condition which would inevitably provide legal resources which would probably be deemed inappropriate.

What is then left for you to do is get content on your page (provided you didn’t have any already). Google AdSense crawlers will soon visit your site, making sure that the ads displayed are relevant to your site’s content.

And you’re all done. For a simple page this should indeed be a matter of a few minutes, which is precisely what makes AdSense the choice for so many. Although it is quick, its mass appeal also makes it the best. Through being the most popular, advertisers and publishers alike see Adsense and Adwords as their natural first choice.
